F2 Academic (General Medicine (General Medicine and specialty experience)/Education Post)

This is an exciting opportunity to participate in an academic Foundation post in clinical education as well as a clinical placement in the acute trust. This post will provide teaching and educational experience with an opportunity to study for a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Education, currently with Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry (PUPSMD). This will be combined with opportunities to achieve the generic foundation programme outcomes through experience in 2x6 month clinical posts, one of which will be in general internal medicine.


Clinical

The clinical experience will comprise a first 6 month post in general medicine and a second 6 month post to be agreed by the educational supervisor taking into account the trainee’s preference. The general medicine component of the post will provide experience in all aspects of general medicine and will be dedicated to a ward specialty (cardiology, endocrinology, respiratory or gastro-enterology). The trainee will have the opportunity to preference their medical specialty. The post will also include experience in general medical admissions and will include duties on the Acute Medical Unit and on-call duties involving an unselected medical take.

For the general medicine post, the trainee will work closely with F1s in general medicine and the specialty, specialist training registrars in medicine (ST1-2), SpRs and specialist training registrars in the speciality (SpR,ST3-4), and consultant physicians, as well as nurses and other members of the multidisciplinary team.


Learning Objectives

• History, examination, and investigation of common specialty disorders and on-going general medical management.
• On-going management of patients with common specialty problems of the ward specialty (e.g. chronic liver disease in gastro-enterology, diabetic ketoacidosis in endocrinology, etc).
• To become competent in the immediate assessment and management of the common general medical emergencies.
• Appropriate investigation and discharge planning of short stay medical admissions.
• Multidisciplinary team working.

The clinical timetable will be agreed with the educational supervisor and may take the form of an integrated week (as shown in the same timetable below) or clinical and academic weeks. Regardless of the agreed working pattern, clinical time should account for two-thirds of the trainee’s time and academic time one-third.

Education

Introduction

This is an exciting opportunity to participate in an academic Foundation post in clinical education as well as a clinical placement in the acute trust. The post will enable you to integrate your clinical training with educational experience in undergraduate and postgraduate education. There is an opportunity to complete a postgraduate certificate in clinical education. The PUPSMD is at the forefront of contemporary developments in clinical education with delivering a new undergraduate medical school curriculum. There is also an internationally recognised research group in Clinical Education.

Dr David Mabin/Dr Russ O’Brien (University of Exeter Medical School)


Nature of duties

There will be opportunities to be involved in a range of educational activities according to individual need, particularly with simulated and scenario based learning, clinical teaching, assessment and feedback. Undergraduate educational activity is supported by the University of Exeter Medical School.

There are opportunities to participate in a number of teaching formats including

6. Teaching skills including large and small group teaching
7. Focusing on an area of special interest and small research project.

Rota/Shift pattern

Normal working week, with scheduling based around timetabled commitments and work to complete course modules and assessments.

Related clinical skills opportunities

In addition to clinical teaching, you will hold an honorary contract with the Medical School, allowing you access to all facilities, including the e learning environments and clinical skills resource centres.

Mandatory teaching

There will be protected time for the completion of Postgraduate Certificate Modules, including 5 days study leave in FY1 to attend the first module of the certificate programme attendance and 5 days study leave and 6 half day action learning sets, during FY2. The trainee will also attend the generic F2 curriculum teaching as outlined by the Postgraduate Medical Centre.

Audit opportunities

There may be some scope for audit within this placement, although it is recommended that a clinical audit is selected for the F2 audit project.
