WHO CAN COMPLETE SUPERVISED LEARNING EVENTS (SLES) AND ASSESSMENTS FOR FOUNDATION DOCTORS?

Supervised learning events (SLEs)

Cased-based Discussion, CbD Persons completing this form should have sufficient experience of the area under consideration and should be consultants, GPs, doctors in higher training (ST3 or above/SpRs) or specialty doctors/staff grade or associate specialists. If possible, different teachers/trainers should be used for each CBD SLE

Mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise, Mini-CEX Persons completing this form must be able to competently perform the interaction themselves. Consultants, GPs, doctors in core training, doctors in higher training (ST3 or above/SpR), specialty doctors/staff
grade or associate specialists, experienced nurses or (if appropriate) allied health professionals can use mini-CEX. If possible, a different teacher/trainer should be used for each mini-CEX SLE.

Direct Observation of Procedural Skills, DOPS Any healthcare worker except F1s can use DOPS provided they are competent in carrying out, teaching and assessing the procedure. This may include Consultant, GP, Associate Specialist, Staff Grade,
Specialist Trainee, Nurse, Allied Health Professional, F2, Physician’s Assistant with expertise in relevant procedure. Different teacher/trainers should be used for each encounter wherever possible.

Developing the clinical teacher Persons completing this form must be able to competently undertake the teaching session themselves. This will usually be consultants, GPs, doctors in higher training (ST3 or above/SpR), specialty doctors/staff grade or associate specialists, or senior nurses. If possible, a different teacher/trainer should be used for each teaching assessment. Medical Students and doctors at the same training grade should not complete this form.

Team Assessment of Behaviour, TAB Foundation doctors must nominate 15 or more assessors. Responses are required from at least 10 assessors, who must include at least 2 consultants or trained GPs (The named clinical supervisor should normally be used here), at least 1 other doctor more senior than an F2, at least 2 senior nurses (band 5 or above), at least 2 allied health professionals/other team members. Up to 2 Foundation doctors and a pharmacist can also be used. More information is provided in the Peninsula TAB Guide 2016/17
